CPAC Picks Romney

Posted by Ryan on March 4, 2007

Another straw poll, this time by the Conservative Politcal Action Conference (CPAC) demonstrates the following results: Romney wins the plurality with 21%, followed by Guiliani at 17%. Newt is in fourth place with 14% (he hasn’t even declared yet!), and Precious with a whopping 12%.

I believe this poll is a better one than the South Carolina Straw Poll (see below) because it gauges conservative points of view from all over the country. Romney gave a great speech at CPAC and made many friends and converts. His “gravitas”, attraction, and conservative talk make him an ideal candidate at this point. Yet, Guiliani is right there in both polls in second place, and Newt “Sam” Gingrich is also in the mix. At least the Republican field isn’t cannibalizing itself like the Dems–our side’s not as popcorn-friendly just yet!

And how about Brownback in 3rd with 15%. Not bad for a guy who is getting no media support yet. The only candidate to beat him in both the CPAC and SC poll is Giuliani. So much for Hunter and McCain (at least 4 spots lower than the SC poll each) and much much better for Romney, obviously. At this point, I believe Brownback is my guy. He’s a solid conservative and seems to be getting the nod from the “ground troops” social conservative base who are so critical as volunteers and campaign work. A few more similar showings in polls like this, and I believe Brownback should be mentioned along with Romney and Giuliani, (and perhaps still McCain) as a “top tier” candidate.

Actually, some people at work thought that a McCain-Brownback ticket might have been the way to go, until they looked at these early polls. But I found it interesting that these generally moderate people gave some love to Brownback. I don’t like his squeamish attitude on Iraq, but I think his conservative credentials are there. I could definitely sleep well at night if he were the president.
