A General Sound-off

Posted by Ryan on May 9, 2007

Retired Major General John Batiste is supporting an ad campaign to pick on Bush and the Iraq War in general, using the time-honored whiny mantra, “Bush doesn’t listen to his generals.”  Perhaps Bush didn’t listen to him, but plenty of other commanding officers have voiced their support for the Baghdad Security Plan, and even called for it.  The generals advise, but they are not ultimately in charge of the final decisions:  the President is.  That’s what makes us different than third-world juntas, and I happen to like it that way.  Also, it sure seems like Bush listened waytoo much to Generals Abizaid and Casey with the old “stay the course” attitude of the last eighteen months.  Wesley Clark’s part of Batiste’s group, too.  That should tell you everything you need to know.

Though hope is in the air!  Other soldiers are fighting back in these propaganda wars.  They may not have the money or Oliver Stone’s backing, but they are good ol’ down home soldiers looking to accomplish a mission before the politicians lose American another war (Boomers love losing wars: 0/1 as protesting youths in Vietnam and maybe 0/2 now that they’re in charge– there’s still a chance they give up on Afghanistan too!).  Here is an excerpt, found in the above article, relating to a pro-Iraq “Appeal for Courage” petition:

“As an American currently serving my nation in uniform, I respectfully urge my political leaders in Congress to fully support our mission in Iraq and halt any calls for retreat. I also respectfully urge my political leaders to actively oppose media efforts which embolden my enemy while demoralizing American support at home….”

“The War in Iraq is necessary and just effort to bring freedom to the Middle East and protect America from further attack.”

True that.
