Giuliani Gives Obama a History Lesson

Posted by Mike on October 17, 2007

Democrats often cite Ronald Reagan when trying to defend their inexplicable desire to negotiate with America’s irrational enemies like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. According to them, if Reagan negotiated with the USSR, then we can negotiate with a leader who spends his free time threatening to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. What these Democrats always fail to mention in their selective retelling of history are the events which preceded Reagan’s dealings with the reasonable and rational Mikhail Gorbachev.

Finally, one of the Republican candidate for President has filled in the gaps of the Democrats’ selective recall. Responding to Barack Obama’s factually incomplete account of history, Rudy Giuliani reminded the empty suit of Ronald Reagan’s pre-Gorbachev stance toward the Soviet Union:

In a barbed speech, Mr. Giuliani told Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, who justified his pledge to negotiate with enemy leaders by pointing to Mr. Reagan’s negotiations with Soviet leaders, that he got his history wrong.

“I say this most respectfully — you’re not Ronald Reagan,” he said.

“Here’s what Ronald Reagan did before he negotiated with the communists. First, he called them the ‘Evil Empire.’ Then he took missiles — he put them in European cities, and he pointed the missiles at Russian cities with names on them. And then he said, in his very nice way, ‘Let’s negotiate,’ …” Mr. Giuliani said, drawing waves of laughter and applause.

This was long overdue.

    Why not post Obama’s reply?

Obama’s camp replied with the real truth: Hugo Chavez, the same dictator Giuliani wont talk to as President, paid Giuliani’s consulting firm for consulting services on their state-run oil company.

Wait…Giuliani can take money from Chavez, but Obama can’t discuss policy with him…

    Sounds Republican to me.

Also sounds like you don’t know what a Republican is. Obama was using Reagan’s name in vain in order to score points with moderates and independents, but as Mike pointed out, Giuliani just noted how bad and irresponsible that historical analogy was. I will not vote for Giuliani in the primaries anyway, but he’s fighting back and I do like that.

If O’Bama replied, as you say, that Rudy is tied to Chavez’s oil interests in some way, then Barry is learning well from the She-Witch: respond to criticism by deflection. Regardless, the point stands: Barry made a boo-boo by using a poor historical comparison inappropriately and Giuliani called him on it.

Not only irrelevant Ryan, but factually incomplete. Cliff missed a couple of steps. Citgo is a company who had a contract with Giuliani’s partners before the Mayor even arrived at the firm. Moreover, Citgo isn’t Hugo Chavez. Citgo is an American subisidiary of an oil company owned by the nation governed by Hugo Chavez, the dictator who Giuliani wasnts to isolate.

I bet this Cliff is the type of guy who brags about how he hangs out with celebrities based solely on the fact that he knows someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows Kevin Bacon.

At least Obama had the decency to tell half the story. As for Rudy, the point stands. Democrats have to rewrite history to make their point.
