Pope Benedict at Ground Zero

Posted by Ryan on April 20, 2008

The Pope visited Ground Zero this morning to say a prayer, light a candle and meet with some of the victim’s families.  Later, Benedict will be giving a much anticipated mass at Yankee Stadium at around 2:30pm EDT.

One could tell that this gesture was deeply felt by Benedict and others with whom he met that were affected by this act of hate 6 1/2 years ago.  I used to be pretty neutral on the Pope — I liked his conservatism and direct approach to Islam, but I didn’t feel connected to him.  JP II had been there so long (most of my life) that saying “Pope Benedict” is still kind of weird, but definitely getting less so.

So, I’ve been glued to coverage of the Papal visit.  I like that the Roman Catholic Church has been getting positive press and that millions of people who are not Catholics are seeing the enthusiasm, the verve and excitement that the Pontiff brings with him.

I am very impressed with Benedict XVI so far and his trip was very successful. The “Great Pope,” John Paul II, had a magnetic personality and was able to not only bring the Catholic Chruch back to its roots, but also attract many more. JPII had a gift for connecting to the youth…Benedict XVI has shown that too on this trip, especially at St. Joseph’s in Yonkers.

I was glad he was chosen to succeed John Paul II and Benedict XVI is on the road to becoming a Great Pope.
