Mike’s VP Endorsement: John Kasich

Posted by Mike on August 24, 2008

You can file this one under “wishful thinking,” but I’d like to offer my two cents on who John McCain should select as his running mate. I am convinced that John Kasich would be McCain’s best option for both political and government purposes.

Politically, Kasich is the best option because he would be a tremendous boost in the State of Ohio. Traditionally a light red state, Ohio has been drifting to the Democrat Party because of the state party’s unique brand of incompetence. Fortunately, Kasich left politics before the party’s reputation was damaged in the Buckeye State and remains one of the few popular Republicans in the state.

Kasich would also help McCain because he is acceptable to the conservative base of our party. He is pro-life, a tax cutter and truly believes in the concept of limited government. He would satisfy all wings of the party.

Kasich would also help McCain on the political front because of his economic expertise. One of the knocks against McCain (rightly or wrongly) is that he is weak on the economy. Kasich could fill that void by reminding people of the fact that he was the Congressman who led the fight for the balanced budgets that the Republican Congress shoved down Bill Clinton’s throat during the 1990s (no pun intended).

Finally on the political front, Kasich is optimistic, bright, telegenic, and would wipe the floor with Joe Biden in the Vice Presidential debate.

Kasich would also be an excellent member of McCain’s administration. Every President should be surrounded with people truly committed to limited government, lower taxes, and protecting the unborn.

In my opinion, McCain’s best option for Vice President is John Kasich. Since Kasich probably won’t be the choice, I’ll be rooting for my second choice, Sarah Palin.

UPDATE: Admittedly, I should have searched before writing this post, but I’m happy to see that I’m on the same page as Michael Novak.

He would be a very good choice, but I am now in Sarah Palin’s camp for becoming McCain’s Veep…and Bill Kristol agrees with me.

As I stated earlier, Sarah Palin has incredible Conservative credentials, she can help to draft a coherent energy policy, while at the same time pushing for ANWR, and she will totally disarm a combative, angry and arrogant Joe Biden in the VP debate. If Biden acts like himself in the debate against her, his actions may hurt Obama.

I was originally supporting Romney for Veep and while I wouldn’t be totally unhappy if he ends up getting it, I’d be much happier to see Sarah Palin get it.

Despite the Dems and the allied main stream media’s desperation to see Romney as McCain’s Veep, Mitt is clearly out, with (1) Obama doubling down on the class warfare theme (McCain’s 7 houses) and (2) McCain doubling down with ads showing the hypocrisy of Biden attacking Obama in the primaries — Romney did way more than that contra McCain.

This leaves only Govs Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty. Pro-abortion Ridge and Dem-Lieberman were never real considerations, despite relentless media goading. Pawlenty’s lackluster TV performances, coupled with Palin pizzazz, the primacy of oil drilling and the ticked off women/Hillary voters, does now portend a McCain/Palin checkmate on the Dems. This is so albeit the Dems and liberal media dare not mention Palin’s name, that is, everyone but…..

And if there’s any question as to Palin being uniquely positioned and able to more than nullify Biden in debate, see the excellent discussion at

    Team McCain, well done!!!

John Kasich would be an excellent choice for all the reasons you cite. Unfortunately I don’t think the McCain team is smart enough to make it happen.

Palin negates any lack-of-experience attack McCain can make on Obama. Both Palin and Pawlenty have zero foreign policy credentials.

I’ve been saying Kasich for a long time!
    1. Economic guru that actually balanced a budget as House Budget Chairman
    2. popular in Ohio and born in PA! That’s a twofer!
    3. He’s got the blue-collar, son-of-a-postman, appeal that illustrates Obama’s weakness.
    4. A great debater! And looks great on TV.
    5. No ties to GWB
    6. He developed the same kind of “maverick” label as McCain by working across the aisle.

There’s nobody better! He’s got energy, smarts, and a sense of humor. Young, but no too young. I hope someone on McCain’s team figures this out before it’s too late. It’ll also come as a shock to the Dems. I bet they don’t have a canned Kasich ad like they do with the rest of the potentials!

    Mike in PA, excellent post!

A McCain-Kasich ticket would make this whole Obama-Phenomena yesterday’s news. With McCain’s substance and experience in foreign policy and maintaining a strong defense and Kasich’s energy and proven dedication to fiscal conservatism and limited government, this would be a sure-win for patriots in both parties. An added plus – Kasich would be picking his VP in four years.
